THANK YOU AC/DC for having us!

Just got back home to Los Angeles. So proud that we got to be part of the legendary AC/DCRock Or Bust World Tour! And let me tell you, they are so fucking good every night it makes us want to step up our game. It’s a world class show. We will join them for the continued European tour so we are going back out in 10 days for 14 more shows. WOW!! 🙂 Such an amazing experience to meet and befriend them and the crew ( catering, lighting, truck drivers, laundry, stage techs, sound engineers, pyrotechnics, bus drivers, electricians, accountants, mangers and much more…) . This is a massive undertaking for them every day to make this show go on ! This is one of the largest tours in the world and to see them work their asses of every day is unbelievable. So a huge THANK YOU to all of the crew and of course the boys –  Angus, Malcolm, Brian, Cliff, Stevie, Chris and all their families for letting us be part of this massive tour. THANK YOU 🙂

We are on the road with AC/DC !

So, Austria, May 15, 2005, 4th show into the European tour featuring the great AC/DC. Rumors have it that this is the largest attendance record in Austrian history at 105,000, breaking the previous record of both U2 and Pink Floyd, which hit in the 90,000 range.  We, the band Vintage Trouble, being the opener of this monumentous event—the party starter, naturally had three interviews just prior to this gig, two being for radio, one for television. A lot was discussed—we like to spread the gospel of all things rhythm & blues—early rock n’ roll and Soul, so we are comfortable in this environment. And yet, there are literally 105,000 people waiting for us to back up our every word and deliver the truth of our convictions. And so it comes—but not without further romance. Lead singer of AC/DC (none other than Brain Johnson) and bass player, Cliff Williams, greet us just before we hit the stage, a testament to the stand-up gentleman these men are, showing us support by just their presence, yet making us feel so much more as we soak in the essence of what staying true is all about, which is something we’d touched upon in our interviews prior. AC/DC, consisting of guitars, bass, drums and vocals, in today’s quantized computer-ridden music that dominates most airwaves, has broken a record today. Perhaps the pendulum (which has always swung in the favor of AC/DC) is coming back around to all things raw and real. That’s where we, Vintage Trouble, truly enter this picture. We hit the stage with guitar, bass, drums and vocals, throwing ourselves unto our convictions of soul music delivered with a primitive edge all our own—and it worked unbelievably well. It truly felt 105,000 VT TroubleMakers were before us, erupting after every song, responding to our every call like they knew the protocol, hands in the air, shouting out loud, dancing in this enormous field with the sun setting over the Austrian mountaintops just beyond. It was spectacular to witness—but to feel it before us was unbelievable, the crowd chanting “ZU-GA-BE” as we left the stage, which we later learned meant “Encore!” We’ve had some great shows, but this one truly felt like a life changing moment of transcendence. Thank you AC/DC, and fans alike, for keeping all things real and raw alive. We are honored to be on this tour, and humbled daily by the influx of support passed our way.

Vintage Trouble to support AC/DC – Rock Or Bust Tour Europe

Vintage Trouble would like to thank AC/DC and their crew for giving us this opportunity to join them on this epic Rock Or Bust European tour!
We believe in the live performance, the connection it can bring. Audience and band creating a community together, that undeniable energy that very few bands can deliver in a massive scale. In rock music AC/DC tops that list that can bring wild fire like that. It’s a huge honor for us to learn from the masters and we will soak in every minute of this tour! We are proud to bring our own style of rhythm & blues music as a contribution to the power of AC/DC, and truly looking forward to be sharing it with all their fans!

See you very soon

The UK, Norway, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, Canada, US and Netherlands all in one giant Summer Of Trouble and yes there was a lot of FLYING! So many highlight’s that it will take months to even comprehend what happened. So many new TroubleMakers that we got to know on a personal level. Huge thanks to all the local promoters that worked their asses of to make it the success it turned out to be. Here are pictures from the last 2 nights at Islington Assembly Hall in London. 2 SOLD OUT shows with our dear UK TroubleMakers, what a great end to the tour!

Great 2014 Spain Tour

We just got to London UK after a great tour of Spain. Wow, we can’t thank the Spanish people enough for the support and fire they brought! We got to see this beautiful land from south to the north.

We started the tour in Santiago de Compostela, Festas de Apóstolo
then off to Madrid where we played the legendary El Sol Club ( SOLD OUT ) . We connected with so many new TroubleMakers there that ended up coming to the rest of the shows in Spain.

Next stop was Soria for the Enclave De Agua Festival with a very late show at 3 AM . But we have to give it up for the Soria audience the kept the energy on very high level!

After only a few hours of sleep we got on the road to San Sebastian for the San Sebastian Jazz Festival also called Jazzaldia. We wish we could have stayed longer in this amazing town but Barcelona was calling.

Our last show of the 2014 Spain tour at the legendary Bikini Club. A great ending to fantastic tour. We had TroubleMakers from all of Spain coming joining UK and Italy, Sweden and Finish TM’s. We thank you all for an amazing time and we hope to come back real soon.

Glastonbury 2014 Acoustic Performance

We had dreamt about coming back to Glastonbury after our 2013 performance as this festival pretty much top em’ all. They offered us to play the highly coveted West Holt stage with BBC TV coverage this year so we were more then exctited. Our chance to perform live on TV for the first time since Later with Jools Holland. Almost as clock work as our intro rolled and we walked on stage some seriously menacing clouds gathered above us and lightning broke out. After only 2 songs ( High Times and Blues Hand Me Down) they decided to evacuate the stage for fear of lightning strikes hitting the top of the stage. Ugh! Power downed we had no other choice then to leave the stage. First we got told the storm would pass in only 5 min and we could start again but after 30 min of thunderous amazon rain our last hopes of taking the stage again got to a halt. Our amazing TroubleMakers kept on thru the rain storm and we couldn’t leave them behind so we did the only thing we could do, performed acoustic in front of the stage.

Summer of Trouble moved on to Scotland, Edinburgh to be exact. We got an extra day to enjoy this beautiful city in full. Queens’s Hall ended up a beautiful spiritual experience with all the TroubleMakers of the North and many from the South as well. We brought the amazing Cailean Hall-Gardiner playing great bagpipe on Not Alright By Me

Sage Gateshead 2014 – A Night to Remember

There will always be mile stones in our lives and one we will always remember is our show last night at Sage Gateshead, UK. Our UK tour took us thru Linton Festival up to Newcastle to venue we visited many time Sage Gateshead. One of the most beautiful venues we know.

We supported Brian May from Queen there and sold out the smaller room there in 2013. Last night we filled the Hall A with 1200 TroubleMakers, such a beautiful sight.

Booker T Jones and KINK.FM – Portland Oregon

VT News: Sadly, the day has come for Vintage Trouble to perform our first show that doesn’t include all 4 members of the band. Rick Barrio Dill will not be performing with us for The Kink FM festival gig. This is new territory for us, and our first instinct was to cancel. But, after conferring with Rick and (literally) our favorite radio station, KINK FM, we decided to “Take lemons and make lemonade,” as Nancy Lee would say. So, our brand of Lemonade tastes like this: Our friend and collaborator, Booker T. Jones, will be joining us in Mr. Dill’s stead. We will surely miss Rick on stage. But we are so very appreciative that the universe has opened us up with a solution. As we hope any and all VT shows entail, the magic of danger shall be in the air on this one. May 24, 2014: a day that will go down in the lore and history of Vintage Trouble.

Blue Note Records Signs with VT

Blue Note Records has signed acclaimed indie rock and soul outfit Vintage Trouble. The Los Angeles-based band will be entering the studio shortly to begin work on its Blue Note debut. Vintage Trouble will also be performing at numerous festivals in the coming months, including Bonnaroo. See below for itinerary.

“It’s so cool to have Vintage Trouble on Blue Note!” said Blue Note Records President Don Was. “I went to see them play at the El Rey Theater a few months ago…there were lines around the block and tickets were sold out based solely on word-of-mouth. They played a two hour show…half of the songs were brand new and totally unfamiliar to the audience…yet the place was rocking from the first notes straight through to the final encore…do you know how hard it is for a new band to pull that off?? It requires tremendous charisma, thundering power, incredible grooves and top notch songwriting…Vintage Trouble has it all going on!”

“We are so excited to be joining a music family that is known for its depth, sincerity, excellence, style, timelessness, and class,” said Vintage Trouble. “Our roots and inspiration are steeped in the musical traditions that Blue Note Records has always cultivated and that are the foundation for American music as we know it today. We could not ask for a better house to share creative endeavors with and we want to thank Don Was and the entire Blue Note family for welcoming us with such open hearts, souls, and minds.”

“From the first time I saw Vintage Trouble I knew that they had something special. They have a soul and an independent spirit that I felt was sorely lacking in the current climate. We’ve implemented and maintained that credo since day one,” observed Vintage Trouble’s manager, Doc McGhee, CEO of McGhee Entertainment Inc. “Now, we are delighted to join forces with Don Was and the Blue Note team who have exemplified that same spirit throughout their musical history. I look forward to working together to take Vintage Trouble to the next level of their career and beyond.”

Vintage Trouble – comprising Ty Taylor (vocals), Nalle Colt (guitar), Richard Danielson (drums) and Rick Barrio Dill (bass) – combine badass chops with an unparalleled work ethic. The band got its start playing residencies at Los Angeles area clubs and word-of-mouth soon spread internationally thanks to a devoted group of fans that dubbed themselves “TroubleMakers.”  Since self-releasing their debut album, The Bomb Shelter Sessions, in 2011, Vintage Trouble has played upwards of 350 shows throughout the US, UK, Europe, Australia and Japan – from intimate venues like Harvelle’s in Santa Monica, CA to big rooms opening for Lenny Kravitz and Joss Stone, from festivals like Coachella, Glastonbury and Rock In Rio to arenas opening for The Rolling Stones, The Who, KISS and Bon Jovi.

“Like an M-80 in church, Vintage Trouble lands with a hiss and then blows apart what’s come to define modern soul, blues and rock,” observed Paste Magazine while Yahoo! Music said, “imagine James Brown singing lead for Led Zeppelin and you’ll get an idea of Vintage Trouble’s muscular, in the pocket sound.” “Like Otis Redding, Vintage Trouble makes music that is a little bit of everything…you can slow dance, groove, rock and let it all go,” noted The New York Times.

Prince Mentions VT in MOJO Interview

Read the MOJO interview here

Exerpt from the new Mojo magazine interview with Prince:

“People don’t understand real musicians anymore.”

In advance of his UK invasion, Prince invited MOJO’s Will Hodgkinson to his secret Caribbean lair, subjected him to a weird vetting procedure before waxing surprisingly candid in an early-hours interview that included an exclusive premiere of his latest album, PLECTRUM ELECTRUM.

On the state of the music industry…
“People don’t understand real musicians anymore. Jack White is great, he’s the real thing, but he isn’t having hits. Why aren’t Vintage Trouble or Lianne La Havas having hits?

The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, Again!

To say that we are so thankful to Jay Leno and The Tonight Show folks for supporting and showcasing us this fourth time (three within a year) would be the grandest of understatements. We all grew up watching The Tonight Show and dreaming of one day getting the honor of hopping in on their legendary tube space. Being an independent band without much radio and mega news awareness, we understand their must be some honest mutual respect and adoration going on with us and them, and that is wildly empowering and igniting for us. We humbly and earnestly say, “We are wholeheartedly grateful for their time, friendship and light.” We dedicate our “Strike Your Light” to them. – Vintage Trouble

BIG THANKS TO OUR TroubleMakers for the amazing support and love!

TROUBLEMAKERS: everything aside, this victory belongs to you. Please take pride in its ownership. And please know that as you root for us, so too do we root for you. As a whole we think of you everyday as you’ve become woven into the fabric of this journey—our journey, together. Perhaps we are but a button pressed upon the jukebox of your ambling hearts. But please know that you ARE our heart. This community, this Troubland, has far exceeded what these four musicians could have ever dreamed up in our rock n’ roll rouse. You TroubleMakers will live as legend in this VT story. And once again you have demonstrated that your collective voice is singular and thus very powerful. It has reached @Ryan Seacrest’s camp and that is a huge feat! Really. What they decide to do about it is yet to be seen. But the true triumph here is the way TroubleMakers have come together, once again, to stand for something. We hope that something is to bring our brand of Soul to the airwaves. So stand tall TroubleMakers. No matter what comes of this it is a huge victory, and that victory is yours! Cheers

Vintage Trouble Newsletter 2013

Vintage Trouble Newsletter May 2013

As we launch into our US Bomb Shelter Tour II, we thought it would be good to catch everyone up on our recent past and some notable things we have coming up.

So, after having a thrilling second year at South By South West music conference (SXSW), Yahoo! Music was kind enough to rank us #2 in their top 4 moments of the entire weekend and straight from Austin, we headed to NPR’s Mountain Stage live radio show in Morgantown, West Virginia. Since our last newsletter, Nalle has graced the cover and pages of Guitar World and Vintage Guitar Magazine, Vic Firth drum sticks has launched a Richard Danielson signature line and Rick has become a poster boy for Aguilar bass amps. Shure Microphones is also endorsing Vintage Trouble for all onstage microphones.

Back to road stories…this Spring has already found us opening for The Dave Matthew’s Band. What giving, warm soul he is. Following the show, we were asked to appear on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno for the second time in 3 months, where we performed “Pelvis Pusher”. Side note – While backstage at The Tonight Show, Doc McGhee called to tell us that we have been offered to open for legendary band The Rolling Stones at Hyde Park in London. One more note about the Tonight Show, we were all suited by male fashion designer/icon John Varvatos, and a few days after, Mr. Varvatos invited us to play at the 5th Anniversary of his New York City Bowery store that was once the famous CBGB’s rock and roll club. After this performance, we played the Fender pre-show for Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Festival. Fender has been so nice to us by gifting us instruments to enhance our sound. The next morning, we woke and headed to CBS Radio in Manhattan, who invited us in-studio for radio and television interviews.

That leads us to Coachella 2013. This music party in the desert felt like the sexiest of heavens. We made so many new music friends and everyone one from the stage crew, to the fans, to the reviewers, could not have been any kinder and welcoming. It felt good to be a local California band representing all of our music family from home. And this just in, soul giant Booker T. Jones has a new album coming out on June 25 called “Sound The Alarm”. This record will be his first album since rejoining Stax Records and Vintage Trouble had the honor or writing and recording a track on the album called “Your Love Is No Love.” Being in-studio with Booker was far beyond a dream. He is humble, smart, focused, calming, inspiring and so real that it hurts.

On the near horizon is Japan. This May, we are thrilled to be returning to the country that debuted our album, The Bomb Shelter Sessions, at #4. This time we will get to hit more of the major cities. In June/July we will be re-joining The Who for their United Kingdom/European leg of the Quadrophenia Tour. We were also invited to perform at Glastonbury Music Festival in England. ….And did we mention WE ARE OPENING FOR THE ROLLING STONES?!?!

Much Love – Vintage Trouble

The Wall Street Journal Vintage Trouble interview/review

Wall Street Journal

“Last night at the Highline Ballroom in New York, Vintage Trouble performed as headliners. The crowd, more than respectable for a chilly Monday night, seemed to know every song, including new material the band is fine-tuning, and they responded to Taylor’s exhortations and yowls reminiscent of the kind Brown, Joe Tex and Wilson Pickett once unleashed.
What separates VT from a copycat soul revue is its muscle: Colt deploys a Jimmy Page-like crunch on guitar and Dill opens up his sound when Colt solos, thus keeping the mid-range alive. Danielson played several unusual patterns that gave added life to music that included several blues numbers, some swamp rock and an old-fashioned stroll. What Taylor described as “wild, dirty energy” worked as well in New York as it had in London and L.A.” Read more…

Soul Train interview with Vintage Trouble

reposted from SoulTrain.com

Remember back in the day, in the golden era of MTV, when the venerable cable network actually programmed music videos? The band Twisted Sister’s anthem “I Wanna Rock” was in heavy rotation, the video a standout amongst the other now-iconic clips from the 80s all because of one pivotal moment: A rather sadistic teacher bursts into a most outrageous rant in the classroom and demands of one student, with an overdose of drama and quivering upper lip, “What do you wanna do with your life?!?!?” The mullet-coiffed kid (who looks like the prototype for Family Guy’s Chris Griffin), unphased by his spaz-tastic teacher, replies calmly, “I wanna rock,” and with that, a blaring guitar riff blasts Mr. “I Am in Command” through the roof of the classroom. (Interesting note, this same scene plays out with the teacher as a father, posing the same question to and receiving the same response from his son, in the band’s video “We’re Not Gonna Take It.”)

In my modern re-imagining of this epic showdown, it isn’t Twisted Sister who suddenly appear in the classroom, all dazzling with schmeared make-up and gigantic 80s hair, but rather the deceptively demure but provocatively raucous outfit, Vintage Trouble. Dressed like perfect gentlemen, they look like the kinds of fellas who are going to gingerly take the stage, strum a few lovely bars, and deliver sweet melodies about how much they love some girl named Donna. But as soon as the music starts, the guys launch into some of the most in-your-face, grimy, gritty grooves this side of a juke joint. Vintage Trouble’s finely crafted tunes are not only sonically masterful, but they mingle just enough naughty to keep it sexy and a sense of humor that keeps it fun.

Hailing from Los Angeles and fully committed to bringing audiences across the globe all of the sweaty, pelvic-thrusting, root chakra-stimulating energy they can stand, the four-piece–consisting of Ty Taylor (vocals), Nalle Colt (guitar), Richard Danielson (drums) and Rick Barrio Dill (bass)–is the present-day embodiment of throwback soul, rock, and R&B, from a time when the lines between these genres were far less distinct and no one seemed to mind one little bit. Their critically-acclaimed premier offering, The Bomb Shelter Sessions, debuted in the spring of 2012 and has, along with their Earth-shaking live performances, positioned the band at the epicenter of one massive soul quake. Pulling from forebears such as Otis Redding, Ike & Tina, and Sam & Dave, and citing greats such as The Rolling Stones, Prince, and The Beatles as sources of inspiration, Vintage Trouble lets you know off jump that they didn’t come to glide gently and inconspicuously into your consciousness. They came to rock, and rock, they do.

For this first Artist to Artist installment of 2013, SoulTrain.com presents Vintage Trouble.

SoulTrain.com: Who is Vintage Trouble, and how did this band come to be?

Ty: Vintage Trouble is me, Richard, Rick, and Nalle. Nalle and I knew each other awhile ago–we were in another band but it wasn’t feeling grounded enough. We knew Rick from a recording session we’d done, and we knew Richard because I used to do a late night jam up in Laurel Canyon. The first time we met he was like, “Let’s get together.” As soon as we were all free to do this, we got together in a room and from the first downbeat, we knew it was meant to be.

SoulTrain.com: Tell us, where does the name Vintage Trouble come from?

Ty: I was in the airport one day with my friend Debbie, and we were talking about my dad. At the same time, Nalle and I were writing the riffs and ideas for [what would become] “Blues Hand Me Down.” So Debbie was asking me about my dad and I said, “He was vintage trouble,” and then I put that into the lyric of the song. The song ends, “I come from vintage trouble/but look out if I’m the one you found.” So kind of, without trying to, we gave ourselves a name.

SoulTrain.com: You guys have amazing chemistry on stage. When you first began playing together, did you immediately click, or did it take some time to get into a groove?

Nalle: The whole thing with Vintage Trouble originally was just to gather the guys and just let it go. We all come from the same backgrounds as far as music and we connected really well. It came so organically–the style of music–we didn’t think much about it. And our thing right away was to get out and play live as soon as possible. We basically just rehearsed for a few days, booked a show, and said, ‘Let’s play!’ You change so much as a band when you start interacting with an audience, and that was really important to us. We started booking a lot of shows in Los Angeles, because we couldn’t afford to travel anywhere else. So we stayed in LA and did a lot of residencies for almost a year, playing five nights a week.

Richard: We kind of knew what was happening after the very first song was over. Things were happening so fast, we went out and played shows right away. We also recorded our first record, which wasn’t even supposed to be a record–we went into the studio to demo some songs we had come up with, and that turned into The Bomb Shelter Sessions. It looks like things happened very quickly for us, but it wasn’t for lack of putting in the time. We did ten times the amount of work in a short amount of time.

SoulTrain.com: Each of you is an essential element in this band–not just because of the specific instruments you play, but also because of the distinct personalities each of you exudes. How do you keep it from becoming too disjointed, while maintaining that individuality?

Rick: Our manager came up with the idea that we should make it like a pie throw [laughs]! One of the beautiful things early on was a main credo we were going by, basically to devolve and be the simplest part of who we are and who we wanted to be individually. We had a collective vision in terms of the style of music, because inherently there is a strong chemistry that’s already there between the four of us. We’re very fortunate to have found each other. On the big picture, the band philosophy is kind of the same, but individually we’re also constantly working on being our best, stripped-down, devolved selves.

Richard: We’re only four guys, so as far as ego, we’ve already done all that. We started this band trying not to make those same mistakes, and being four guys we really have to rely and depend on each other. We only have one guitar player, and a drummer, and a bass player, and a singer–there is nobody else. The parts we’re playing carry a lot of weight; Nalle might have to play horns when he plays guitar, Rick might have to take organ and I have to take percussion. Ty is the singer and he’s got a lot of real estate to fill. We really need each other, so there’s no room for ego in this band. It would disintegrate very quickly, and we all realize that.

SoulTrain.com: What about your look? It’s tight, polished, and harkens back to earlier times.

Richard: The music that we love is more of an era of music–late 50s, early 60s, old soul and R&B, rock n roll. Our heroes would put on suits to go to work, and that’s what we were looking at. From that it just kind of evolved–we love art and old films, we pick up ideas from all kinds of places. Also, we’re four individuals, so there’s going to be four individual feels and styles and tastes. We don’t try to over-think it; we just try to let it be what it is.

SoulTrain.com: Let’s switch gears just a bit. Can each of you tell us the very first record you ever bought?

Nalle: My first record was Jimi Hendrix jamming with Curtis Knight. Great album! I might have been six or seven years old, I think, and I basically burned that album because I played it so much!

Rick: I’m pretty sure it was Van Halen, “And the Cradle Will Rock” [from The Women and Children First].

Nalle: Rick brings the hard rock into the band [laughs]!

Ty: Mine was Carole King’s Tapestry. I got it from Brown and Sons Barber Shop, which also sold records.

Richard: The first record I actually remember buying was Van Halen, Fair Warning. Super early 80s–I was probably 12.

SoulTrain.com: Every band has nightmare gig stories. Is there one that stands out in your minds as the absolute worst gig you ever played?

Ty: The night before the story I’m about to tell you, we’d played in Japan. Our album had been released and was #4 in Japan–we were playing for 1,000 people. We get on the plane and fly to Anchorage, AK. Here’s where my story begins…We were booked at a university, playing in the middle of a field. Everyone’s running to get to their classes–no one’s stopping to watch a band! So we go from having the masses watching us in Japan, to people walking past us and not even looking toward the stage!

Richard: I was at that same show [laughs], and it turned out to be a really good show. And we met a reindeer that day!

Rick: My most interesting gig was at a nudist colony. There are things you don’t want to see at a gig like that, but it was definitely an adventure!

SoulTrain.com: Rick, did you know you were playing at a nudist colony before you accepted the gig, or was it a surprise?

Rick: It was a Halloween concert and it was a three-piece band. We knew [it was a nudist colony], but we didn’t have to be naked. It was fun.

SoulTrain.com: What’s next for Vintage Trouble?

Nalle: We’ve released two new songs on iTunes and Amazon as digital downloads. We also have a documentary coming out, called 80 Shows in 100 Days. We shot that when we were touring in Europe.

SoulTrain.com: We’d love for each of you to share your personal musical influences with our SoulTrain.com audience.

Ty: When you look back it’s great to see people like Jody Watley dancing in the crowd. I used to love the Scramble Board!

Richard: I actually got the chance to do an episode of Soul Train with the band Calloway (“I Wanna Be Rich”), so I got to be on the set and be a part of history. It was “mock rock”–we didn’t actually play live. I knew even then at a young age, there was history there. I soaked it in. It was a good moment.

Rick: I remember looking forward to Soul Train all the time. One of my first vivid memories was Rick James and those boots! He was such the mack!

SoulTrain.com: Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?

Richard: We’ve been on a mission to expose this style of music to [SoulTrain.com’s] demographic, so thanks so much for coming to us!

Ty: We have a really great community of people who follow us–they’ve labeled themselves TroubleMakers. We welcome one and all to join this dynamite community of people, where new friendships are made everyday, love affairs, lust affairs, new bands being formed–a bunch of like-minded and cool people. Come find us!

Vintage Trouble was in the midst of a weekly residency at Harvelle’s Blues Club in Santa Monica, Calif., when a member of Doc McGhee’s management team saw them and insisted his boss see them, too. The legendary KISS manager signed them on the spot.
When the Who’s Roger Daltrey needed a band to play a benefit party a year or so ago, McGhee booked Vintage Trouble. Now, the Los Angeles four-piece is opening for the Brits on what was originally planned to be “An Evening With” The Who.

“Roger just fell in love with them,” CAA agent Matthew Morgan told Pollstar.
It isn’t hard to see why.
Singer Ty Taylor, with a voice most often compared to Otis Redding, is a fireball of energy – a recent performance on “Late Night With David Letterman” ended with Taylor bolting into the audience and climbing chairs, to his host’s amusement.
Fans of the Black Keys, Gary Clark Jr., and Alabama Shakes, Vintage Trouble combines retro R&B with edgier blues rock for an irresistible combination coupled with a dizzying performance. Morgan described fans as “grabbing at them like they were The Beatles” after one of their opening sets on the Who tour.

“It feels like they are creating true fans and a true following that isn’t going to go anywhere anytime soon,” Morgan said. “One thing about this band: I never, ever, ever have to apologize for how their live performance is.
“They’ve opened for Metallica and Bon Jovi in Europe, and the fans just went nuts – and that says a lot. You couldn’t ask for two more different groups, or types of fans. But it’s just insane.”
Vintage Trouble is entertaining offers from more than 25 festivals for summer, Morgan said, and looking at more opening slots with artists like the Dave Matthews Band, where they can also book late-night club dates in select markets. And there will be headlining tours in March and again in fall.

We shot this on top of the London Hotel, Los Angeles December 19th, 2012. Got a great view of the Hollywood Hills in the background. It was recorded early in the morning to the major complaints from hotel guests 🙂 We did 3 songs that morning Nobody Told Me, Nancy Lee and Blues hand Me Down. An interview with the band also got added. Enjoy!

Montreal Lemonade (rbd)

Lifetime musicians, despite all the difficulties, we really are the lucky ones and I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have a career in music. Chasing your bliss really is something so few people get to do and somewhat of a secret to life I believe.  As many reading this may know, while on tour earlier this year supporting the Cranberries in Montreal, we had one of those moments where misfortune bit down hard when several of our instruments were stolen from us and it was a grind in those moments to say the least. Sometimes though, it’s this misfortune that forces us to take a step back, appreciate what we DO have even deeper, and often jump forward in ways even bigger than we thought were possible. True goodness and positivity can come out of these awful moments in life if we just stay open to the possible. They can also serve moments of great growth in our lives. I recently thought again to share this particular adventure to celebrate all the amazing energy that helped make this great story happen and to also thank those again for this love. To celebrate TroubleMaking the way only our community knows how.

As an opening act, you are blessed because you get to play larger stages and expose your music to whole new sets of crowds. Similarly, as a new band, you have logistical, budget, communication and time constraints that create constant challenges as well. Not being able to park at the venue and somewhere between our previous night in town and soundcheck, our van was unattended and two main instruments were stolen from us.   The first was a backup Les Paul that Nalle had borrowed from a dear friend of ours and the second was my main bass…a Blonde Fender 57′ ReIssue P-Bass Maple neck that was customized all my own and something tremendously special to me.   The love and time that we put into our main instruments, you can’t imagine.   I don’t know what to compare it to, but the feeling you get in your stomach when you figure out this part of your family has been stolen from you…it is a pain like no other.  Its tough to even imagine.  As we were literally on our way to soundcheck when we realized, the mad rush began to a) get a replacement so we could do the show in 2 hours, b) inventory in my head what else was also with the bass in the case when it was stolen and c) somehow keep processing all the emotions of the experience but also block it out as it got closer to showtime. The show still is most important thing.  It always is.

We managed to handle everything in the way of a loaner bass with the help of the local promoter and the show went off fantastic.  I think there is even plenty of youtube video from that night in Montreal.   It really was a great emotional show.   Afterwards though, it was back to reality, trying to figure out what to do next. I was trying to just breathe, not freak out and also just trying to pick up the lessons and stay open to what I was supposed to be learning from this experience. This is where things start to take a beautiful turn.   (Life can be funny like this).

We have a community called the TroubleMakers that supports us in ways I have never experienced anywhere else in music or life for that matter.   We can’t really call them fans because they are more like family to us.  They are so positive, so loving, and such a force amongst themselves…it simply humbles me to be a part of such a tribe.    Several of the key TroubleMakers, and in particular Adam and Lisa Kennedy, felt a particular outrage to what had happened to us once the news posted on our Facebook about the stolen guitars.  From their computers all the way in Newcastle, UK, they started a twitter campaign to blast the world with news, pictures and the serial number of my stolen bass.   They tirelessly worked and got other TroubleMakers to help do the same, reposting and reposting the story.  So much so that they reached the limit that Twitter allows for number of tweets in a day.  They then moved to other accounts and anyone that would pick it up as well…and in the process, the story actually began to take hold in a huge way. It started trending on twitter.  While we were driving all day to our next show in Providence, Rhode Island, we started hearing and seeing the story gaining more and more traction.  Through the help of the T.M. community, our management, and all of the constant pushing of the story, every pawn shop and music store in Montreal knew about the bass and I was even contacted by one of the largest radio stations in Montreal to do an interview about the story during drive time radio.   Even the awesome gig bag company that I use (Reunion Blues) offered me an endorsement deal from the story and they immediately replaced my bag for free.  Huge names were now starting to get wind of the story and repost and before we knew it, people like Zak Wylde and Peter Frampton and even Slash (a childhood hero of mine) had retweeted the story.  SLASH knew about our band and even emailed Ty to offer his help.  Incredible. With his help now sharing to all his followers and friends at this point, we now had something like 3 million posts of the story. It really helped push it over the edge and it was incredibly emotional for me how many people were just trying to help any way they could.

Over the next few days, the word actually got to Fender Worldwide on what had happened thanks to the constant online reposting of the story as well as the critical help of our manager Doc McGhee.   Doc put in the call and connected Fender even closer to who we are as a band, the story of the stolen bass, and our overall work ethic.  Once Fender combined it with the help we had from people like Slash, Fender UK and all the TroubleMakers, they offered up something they rarely do anymore…a full artist endorsement to me for Bass.  Insane.   My heroes have all played Fender and I have been a Fender guy most of my life.  To now have the support of Fender Worldwide, its a kids dream come true.   2 days later, I had a Blonde 57′ RI Fender PBass Reissue delivered to me and I can now call myself a Fender worldwide artist.  Montreal Lemonade was made in full and it was humbling beyond words.

Flash forward now to a few months ago where we got the honor of playing the same festival in Sweden with Slash.   We were backstage and I got the incredible opportunity to meet the man himself and even more important for me, I got to personally thank him for his help with the reposting of my bass story.   He had heard of the Fender deal I picked up from it and even made the great comment that “Twitter is good for some things”. Indeed it is.  Only for me, it wound up being good for so much more in addition to being able to personally thank a childhood hero for his help and goodwill.

To date, we haven’t gotten the stolen bass back, but I’m hopeful she will find her way back to me one day.   In the meantime, this story now represents something to me that is so much more valuable than what was lost that day.   To have such positivity be born from such a negative situation is a true testament to love and openness of the human spirit.   Everyone that helped in whatever little ways they could added up to something epic in proportions.  This was an incredible reminder to me that immense good can come from bad, especially if we stay positive and let it in.

I have so many people to thank for this and even more importantly, to where I am at in life.   I am blessed to have the friends, family, TroubleMakers, mentors and angels that I have as part of my fabric.  To all those who are under this beautiful umbrella, you know who you are and I thank you with all my heart.  Genuine Love is something that can’t be destroyed or stolen.  It is fantastically contagious and so vital.  I hope each of you know how much I truly do appreciate all that you have given to me.

The people you are, the love that you spread, and the lives you lead…

Thank you for lighting by example.

Cheers and Sayunara

Vintage Trouble - Asakusa Temple

Vintage Trouble – Asakusa Temple

Before I fly home after a long summer of being away from the states we refer to as united, I would like to put some thoughts on paper while they are fresh in my mind and illuminating my soul.

As a child I always dreamed of being a singer that would travel the world making music, and sharing songs with different cultures, but I had no idea what the reality of the situation would bring with it. In my mind I thought the core of being a traveling musician would be music, but what I have fortunately found, is that is not; It is about the people.

As I think about flying home today, I’m not thinking about the words I put out or the notes I sang. My minds eye is full of the beautiful and inspiring people that I came in contact with.

TroubleMakers, you are really unique brand of music lover. I will try to strip myself of all desire to be cool in this paragraph, in order to allow you to truly feel my appreciation and adoration of you.

We like to challenge our audiences, to go beyond their normal good time, and I want to acknowledge what so many of you have challenged us to do by coming to so many shows. You have made us feel the need to never let you down and always give you and ourselves something new out of every show… No, out of every moment of every show.

We head home feeling like stronger men due to the fact that you have made us feel necessary and exciting. We land in Los Angeles tomorrow more humble because of the way your realness keeps us grounded. Tomorrow night as we lay in bed, we will fall asleep with smiles on our faces because of how sexy you have made us feel all summer.

If you have not been told by one of us at some point, we would like you to know this. There are not enough tears of joy in the world to fill the place you have in our hearts. You have made the summer of 2012 feel like a delicious home away from home.

From Japan, I and we raise a glass of the finest unfiltered Sake to you. Thank you for your hearts and souls, your time and minds and your sweat applause, but mostly we thank you for being your wild abandoned selves and putting out and giving in the way you have and do.

Please think of us fondly while we are away and don’t be strangers.

Peace please,

Unexpected inspirations… (Ty Taylor)

Yesterday while driving from Iowa to Missouri with the rest of the band, we pulled over so that I could do a phone interview. Top of the conversation I find out that the reporter had attended the 1967 Stax tour that featured Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, Eddie Floyd, Booker T. and the M.G.’s, The Mar-Keys and more. When I first saw the recording of this concert it changed my life, my outlook on everything that I had done as a performer, and everything I wanted to do from that moment on. I had never seen such passion and soul and communion on stage before. Seeing this captured evening connected me to a part of myself I didn’t even know needed connection. It stitched together stage and life for me. It ignited my desire to have audience and performers become one during any given gig.

I had the opportunity to ask this man about details I thought I’d never have the answers for. Throughout our conversation he drew comparisons between what went down on that tour and what we do now as a band, it literally brought chills to my spine and a heightened pride of our art and mission.

Thank God for unexpected inspirations.

I’m not even sure if it was good interview but I will tell you this….it was a magical conversation.

To top the whole thing off I found this record in a store earlier today and had to have it…

This Week in Vintage Trouble History (Ty Taylor)

It’s amazing how long the power of one show will stay in your body and resonate as if it were still happening.

Los Angeles, a deeply sincere thank you for the amount of primitive, forward, passionate and wild energy that filled The El Rey Theatre on Thursday night. Our home town community brought all of these things and truly claimed back their ‘ownership’ of Vintage Trouble as an L.A.-grown band.

We dedicated this video to our dear friend and top TroubleMaker Nick Faigin who suddenly passed away days before this show. “It was important that we not do something all sad, but that we do something that was a jam”
Vintage Trouble with friends, Bradley Keys, Countre Black, Charlie Brumbly, Reina Hidalgo & Kamilah Marshall.

This was our official album release show, and as we looked into the crowd we saw so many faces old and new, and everyone was joining in the party. Hearing so many people singing every word of every song was decadent. It was like each person in the room was both on stage and in the audience all the same time, as lionel richie would say- all night long.

We have waited a long time to officially release this album to the states, and it is exciting that the foreplay is over, letting us take this relationship to the next level. These songs were written in this city; The roots of the music and character of the words are here. This release is a big, no, a HUGE deal to us on a personal level.

2 days prior to The El Rey show, we had the honor of performing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! All day I kept thinking about all the TV performances that I have seen that over the years that have inspired me, and us, to do what it is that we do. We wanted to connect to the folks at home in that same way. It was our mission. It’s been a while since we did a big TV gig as a band, but it went off smoothly with the on-air filming feeling like one of our live shows. It is magical to share a moment like that with your musical brothers and have it captured forever.

We ended this EPIC week by playing our first show in San Diego, celebrating at The Griffin to a full, sweaty room. It reminded me of when we first started playing overseas where we landed in a city of strangers and left feeling like we gathered new friends and TroubleMakers. The people San Diego danced their asses off and made us feel welcomed. I think we can all say we made a great connection to that city.

This week confirmed why we started doing this as a band. Everything is feeling real and ripe and in the flow in America, and we’ve thoroughly enjoyed reconnecting and bringing The Bomb Shelter Sessions home.

Peace please,

– Ty Taylor

Get Into Some (Vintage) Trouble | Swagger LA – Best Events in Los Angeles

If you’re looking to get away from the metro-sexual indie rockers, eastside stoner bands and tribute groups playing ‘80s covers in the valley, the most happening band in LA that you haven’t heard of is Vintage Trouble. Don’t miss your chance to catch them performing over the next couple of weeks.

Formed in early 2010, Vintage Trouble describe themselves as “live-wired, dirty mouth’d, pelvis pushin’ juke music” and like Amy Winehouse and Raphael Saadiq, they take the classic soul sound and make it fresh and contemporary, adding a little bit of dirty rock and roll in the process.

The band is made up of seasoned players however their greatest asset is lead-singer Ty Taylor. He manages to roughen up his velvety smooth soul tenor just enough to blend with guitarist Nalle Colt’s jagged, rhythm and blues riffing. The Trouble’s rhythm section consists of Rick Barrio Dill on bass and Richard Danielson on the drums.

Onstage, the Trouble are indeed something to behold. Taylor, looking like he’s just stepped off an Atlantic Soul album sleeve from 1968, is capable of conjuring the funky get-down of James Brown, the rock bravado of Lenny Kravitz and the honey-tinged soul of Otis Redding.

The band meanwhile, with their fedoras and mid 20th century suits, look like Chicago gangsters packing electric guitars instead of machine guns. In the dress down world of ironically cool Hollywood, Vintage Trouble give people an excuse to dress up while they get down.

The audience at any given Vintage Trouble show is generally packed with the band’s fans, known coincidentally as “Troublemakers.” Whatever you want to call them, they’re usually worked up into a frenzy midway through the first number.

Bands like this don’t stay under the radar long. Their ten song self-produced debut, “The Bomb Shelter Sessions,” is already a hot-seller on iTunes. The band recently returned from their first British tour, where the shows were so successful that they’re headed back at the end of April to open for legendary Queen guitarist Brian May and shoot a segment for the BBC’s “Later with Jools Holland.” So the Trouble’s upcoming LA shows may not only be your last chance to see them before they leave, they might be your last chance to say you saw them “back when. “

The band has a full April schedule before heading across the pond for their UK tour, including shows at Harvelle’s in Santa Monica, The Edison downtown, The Tar Pit on La Brea and Barre Vermont.

Any Vintage Trouble show is a guaranteed good time but if you can, catch them at Harvelle’s on a ‘Trouble Tuesday’ where you can experience what drummer Richard Danielson, describes as, “Vintage Trouble at their most juiced,” playing to their home crowd of Troublemakers.
